Your supplier wants paying before it ships. Your bank wants an SBLC.

Import finance is short-term funding that pays an overseas supplier before the goods ship, so an importer doesn't tie up its own cash between paying for stock and selling it.

New suppliers in Asia, Turkey or the US often want a deposit or full payment before production starts. The traditional answer is a bank: a letter of credit (LC) or a standby letter of credit (SBLC). That usually means a facility application, cash or property as collateral, an issuing fee, and weeks of documents before your supplier sees a cent.

Then the goods spend weeks at sea, and your own customers pay 30 to 90 days after delivery. The cash gap isn't a sign you're overtrading. It's how importing works.

How Treyd works instead

No guarantee to arrange. We pay the invoice ourselves.

  1. 1

    Get a limit

Apply online in minutes. We look at your accounts and trading, not your property. You get a decision within 24 hours, and having a limit costs nothing.

  2. 2

    Upload the supplier invoice

Deposit, proforma or final invoice. Choose which orders to finance and see the exact fee before you confirm.

  3. 3

    We pay your supplier

Straight to their bank account. To your supplier it's a normal payment against their invoice.

  4. 4

    Repay in one payment

Repay Treyd after 30 to 150 days, or earlier if you like. Your limit frees up for the next order.

Treyd vs. letter of credit and SBLC

Plus bank trade finance, on cost, speed and security

Letter of credit

Issuing fee plus charges for amendments, document checks and confirmation. Weeks to set up, usually against a cash margin or a charge over assets. One LC per shipment.

SBLC

An annual fee on the guaranteed amount, drawn or not. Weeks to arrange, usually backed by a cash margin or a charge over assets. A fixed amount and expiry date.

Bank trade finance

Interest plus arrangement fees. Weeks to months to approve, against security and often a personal guarantee. A fixed facility and term.

Treyd

One flat fee per invoice: 1.2–2.8% a month, shown before you commit. Credit decision in 24 hours. No LC, SBLC or cash margin, and your stock isn't the security.

When a letter of credit still fits better

  • Your supplier only ships against a bank instrument. Treyd pays invoices; we don't issue LCs or guarantees.

  • You need longer than five months. Treyd repayments run 30 to 150 days.

  • You're buying equipment, not stock. Asset finance is built for that.

The bank options above describe what's typical for each product. Terms vary by bank.

What it costs

One flat fee, based on the amount financed and how long you take to repay. In Ireland, fees range from 1.2% to 2.8% per month. No setup fee, no account fee and nothing to pay for a limit you don't use. Example at a monthly rate of 1.6%:

  1. Company X, an Irish homeware importer, has a €100,000 limit at a monthly rate of 1.6%.

  2. They use Treyd to pay a €40,000 invoice from their supplier in China and repay after 3 months.

  3. The total fee is €1,920 (1.6% of €40,000 × 3 months). They repay €41,920 in one payment.

Who import finance from Treyd is for

Businesses buying physical products from overseas suppliers

You import physical products

Wholesalers, brands, retailers and e-commerce businesses buying finished goods or raw materials abroad.

You've traded for a year or more

A limited company with at least one year of trading. No sole traders.

You turn over €200,000+

Annual revenue of €200,000 or more. Your limit is reviewed as you grow.

Not the right fit if…

You need a bank-issued LC or SBLC itself, funding for services rather than goods, or terms beyond five months.

Import finance questions

What Irish importers ask before their first order.

Do I need an SBLC to pay a new overseas supplier?

Not if the supplier will accept payment upfront. An SBLC or letter of credit exists to assure a supplier it will be paid. When Treyd pays the supplier's invoice directly before shipping, there's nothing left to guarantee. If your supplier insists on a bank-issued instrument, Treyd isn't a substitute: we pay invoices, we don't issue guarantees.

Is Treyd's import finance a loan?

It's credit, but not a term loan. Treyd pays your supplier and you repay us in one payment after 30 to 150 days. There's no monthly instalment schedule: you pay one flat fee per invoice, fixed when you confirm it.

How quickly can Treyd pay my overseas supplier?

Once you have a limit, you upload the supplier invoice and confirm it. We pay according to your instructions and send you a payment confirmation. Getting your limit takes up to 24 hours from a complete application.

In which countries can my suppliers be based?

Treyd pays suppliers in most countries around the world. We can't pay suppliers in sanctioned countries.

Can Treyd finance a deposit before my supplier starts production?

Yes. You can finance deposit, proforma and final invoices, as long as there's a supplier invoice to pay against.

Does my supplier have to do anything when Treyd pays?

No. Your supplier receives a normal bank transfer against its own invoice. There's no LC to negotiate and nothing for them to sign.
